Urgent Matters, Philips Blue Jay Consulting, and Schumacher Clinical Partners would like to congratulate the following team for being chosen as the winner of the 2017 Emergency Care Innovation of the Year Award:

Emergency Department Telehealth Express Care Service

(Submitted by New York Presbyterian - Weill Cornell Medical Center)

The ED Telehealth Express Care Service uses telemedicine to rapidly evaluate patients who seek care at their Emergency Departments. While traditional in-person Urgent Care and low acuity ED visits may take as long as 2-3 hours to complete, the 3,000 plus ED telehealth Express Care patient visits were reduced to a median time of 39 minutes. Telehealth Express Care visits are performed collaboratively by an Advanced Practice Provider and a Telehealth Physician. This innovative workflow led to a dramatic decrease in length of stay in conjunction with a high degree of safety and patient satisfaction.

We also want to congratulate our Honorable Mentions:

  1. Acute Care at Home Submitted by West Health & UC San Diego: Department of Emergency Medicine The ACH Team developed home-based care order sets, process flow maps, and supportive infrastructure (e.g. secure text messaging and telehealth), allowing the emergency physician to provide a warm hand-off from the ED to the home health providers and the primary care physician for medical oversight of the ACH episode.
  2. ED Antimicrobial Stewardship Submitted by UC Davis Health: Department of Emergency Medicine | The antimicrobial stewardship intervention reduced antibiotic duration and improved guideline adherence by using a physician champion, an electronic order set based on 2014 IDSA guidelines, and by disseminating an ED specific wound isolate antibiogram, as well as utilized peer-comparisons and individual audit and feedback. Click here for Dr. Larissa May's Urgent Matters webinar on ED Antimicrobial Stewardship.

  3. Timely Provider Shift Report Submitted by Edward Elmhurst Health | The innovation was an e-survey system to share timely shift feedback with providers regarding performance metrics and patient well-being or service issues. Timely provider shift feedback resulted in insights on practice corrections that improved patient safety and experiences.

Urgent Matters will feature the winning innovation and Recipient of Distinguished Recognition on our webinar series.
